Customers who are looking to save time and money often ask us: can DBS Checks be reused?
Many workers undergoing a DBS Check will have long-term plans to work their way up the company they are hoping to join, securing several promotions in the process.
However if each role requires a DBS Check, that could require extra time and money from the job applicant.
But as an alternative – can DBS Checks be reused, we hear you ask?
The DBS update service
The good news is, the answer is yes – it just requires a little bit of foresight and planning ahead.
The government-run DBS update service allows job applicants to keep DBS certificates up-to-date, so that they can be reused when applying for a position in the same workforce, as long as the same level of DBS Check is required.
If an employee gives consent, then the DBS update service also lets employers check certificates online, saving them time too.
Registration for the update service costs just £13 a year, but is completely free for volunteers.
All you need is the application form reference number once it has been countersigned and sent to the Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS).
Otherwise, you can register for the DBS update service up to 19 days after your DBS certificate has been issued by simply using the certificate number.
A full guide for applicants is available from the government.
So, can DBS Checks be reused? Yes they can. But is it worth it?
The advantages of the DBS update service
The main advantage of using the DBS update service is that an applicant only has to pay full price for a DBS Check once, as long as they remain within the same workforce.
It’s also a time-saver in several ways.
Firstly, there’s no need to fill in a new application form each time.
Secondly, you don’t have to wait for it to be renewed, which could prove to be an advantage over other applicants if you have competition when going for a new role.
Finally, it’s quicker and easier for the employer too, who can see the disclosure online instantly.
Can DBS Checks be reused? A summary
A DBS certificate can be reused for employees staying within the same workforce, so long as the new role requires the same level of disclosure.
