Do you need DBS checks for university placements? With the new academic year starting we get this question a lot!
As part of your course you may be required to engage in a placement or to gain some suitable work experience. Often you may be requested to obtain a DBS check to do this.
But how do you know which level of check you need? And how can you apply for one? Read on to find out all you need to know about DBS checks for university placements.
DBS Checks for University Placements: Which level of check do I need?
If you’ve been asked to apply for a DBS check for a university placement, it may not always be clear which level of check you need.
Put simply, there are three levels of DBS check; basic, standard and enhanced. Anyone over 16 can obtain a basic DBS check, which will detail any unspent convictions an applicant may have.
The standard and enhanced are only available to those in certain positions, and can only be requested by a company/organisation on behalf of the applicant.
As such, the level of DBS you need will depend on the type of placement. If it is a role such as administration or technology, then it is likely that you would only require a basic DBS. If the role will involve working with children and/or vulnerable adults it is possible that an enhanced DBS check will be needed. This would often apply to those engaging in a school placement as part of teacher training.
For further information on DBS check eligibility, you can contact the DBS directly.
DBS Checks for University Placements: How do I apply for a check?
The most suitable method to apply for DBS checks for university placements largely depends on the level of check that is needed.
A basic DBS check can be requested by an individual, typically either through the DBS directly if you are living and/or working in England and Wales, or Disclosure Scotland if you are living and/or working in Scotland.
If you have confirmed that you are eligible for a higher level of DBS check based on your placement, such as the standard or enhanced DBS check, then a company/organisation will need to apply on your behalf.
In some circumstances this may be the organisation for which you are undertaking the placement for. However, often your university will apply for the check for you as the placement is being carried out as part of your studies.
As such, in order to ensure the correct level of check is requested on your behalf we would recommend contacting your university to discuss the application process further.
